Dental procedures and techniques have improved greatly over the past few decades and treatments that were once uncomfortable and painful now generally are done with a minimum of discomfort. Not everyone sits in the dental chair feeling relaxed. Our 33609 sedation dentist, Dr. Randall A. Diez, DMD and his associates have many options to put anxious patients at ease. When a patient is too anxious to undergo treatment using just a local anesthetic or if a more complex procedure is involved our practice can use various sedation techniques to calm our patients.
Our 33609 sedation dentist believes that a patient’s stress and discomfort level should be at a minimum during a visit to our office no matter what procedure they are having. Nitrous oxide inhalation analgesia, “laughing gas,” is the traditional form of mild sedation that is used during many dental procedures, the patient is awake during the procedure while under nitrous oxide but feels no pain. Oral sedatives are also a common form of easing patient anxiety. These have a calming effect on the patient who is awake during the procedure and knows what is going on but is not anxious. Anxiolysis is a light sedative that is usually administered orally and leaves the patient awake but often sleepy during the procedure. Patients report a great sense of relaxation while under Anxiolysis, which wears off in a few hours.
For more involved procedures o that might bring stronger amounts of pain or for anxious patients who prefer to sleep through the visit IV sedation is the best option. A specially trained dental anesthesiologist administers the IV sedation, which places the patient in a sleep-like state. They feel no pain and don’t recall the procedure when they awaken. During the sedation the patient is monitored at all times by the anesthesiologist. Sedation dentistry has made procedures that are simple to the majority of patients possible for those patients who feel too much stress to sit through dental treatments under a local anesthetic. Don’t let stress and fear deter you our 33609 sedation dentist will make the procedure painless.
